DIY Headboard

I am going to show you in a few words & pictures how i turned this plain old hollow door into a beautiful king size headboard for ONLY $30!!

Go to your local salvage yard or re-use store and find a nice door.  Ours is Construction Junction. 

This hollow door was $5.

I bought this iron piece at a TJMaxx type store called CWPrice.  It was $14.99.  You could probably paint something if you can't find something you like.

The trim I picked up at Home Depot.  It was $2.99 a piece, and I got three pieces.

You will want to lay the trim out to see how far from the edges you want it and still have the iron center look good.  Measure all around and make pencil marks on the door.  Mine were 5.5" from the top and sides and 8.5" from the bottom (because of the door knob hole).

Paint your first color from the edge to the pencil marks.

Paint the second color inside.

I added wood glue then attached my trim that I painted and cut to size.

I drilled holes to loop wire through to hold my iron piece in place. Each end and in the center.

Found some more trim in the basement, painted, cut and used the nail gun to nail it in place.  This went on the outer edge to frame the door and cover up the hinge cut-outs.

Attached the iron.

Then my lovely husband help me hang it on the wall!

We just screwed it directly to the wall, but if you wanted to attach it to a bed frame you could easily attach a 2x4 to each side (in the back) and attach it to your frame.

Cost Breakdown, after tax:

Door $5.35

Trim $9.59

Iron $16.04

TOTAL: $30.98

On a side note, I love hyacinths. I went to a craft show over the weekend with my mom and sisters and I bought 3 candles, all floral, all remind me of my grandmas. Lilac, Hyacinth and Lily of the Valley....ahhh...spring- I think it's coming soon!

I LOVE Craigslist...

Let me start off by explaining... We live in a 100+ year home. Apparently, when these homes were built, they didn't feel the need to add closets on the main floor. We also have a huge space, everyone here calls them 'parlors' that is basically useless right inside the front door. It's a good home for the Christmas tree, but for the other 10 months of the year, the dog uses it to watch {I mean bark at} other dogs. Big waste of space.


So, we have no closets on the first floor. This has created mass confusion over the winter in our parlor with 4 sets of coats, hats, scarfs, gloves, boots, etc... {and the dog} you get the picture. We thought that we had the problem solved with a coat tree and a basket for gloves. No. AND, my 9 month old LOVES to eat shoes, and they are too readily accessible to her. My sister-in-law has a giant dresser in her entry way that houses various things for them, and I thought that might solve our problems. So, onto Craigslist I go!!


I know I have raved about it before, but man, I love Craigslist!!! I have never had a bad experience and I honestly feel like I always get a bargain. And what woman doesn't like to get a bargain!?! So, here's my latest find, a Drexel 'La Fleur' Dresser and Nightstand:

A Few scratches & dents, but nothing a little touch up paint won't fix!
And, the nightstand!! Goodbye old ugly end table in the living room!!Here it is re-painted and in it's new home.And finally, our new 'closet'! I didn't repaint this one, too pretty. All Jake's shoes in one drawer, his gloves, hats & scarfs in another. All Zoey's shoes in one drawer, her gloves, hats & scarfs in another. Scott's shoes are in the middle, and we still have 2 more drawers for whatever I want. The coats are still on the coat tree for now...Picked up the mirror for $19.99 at a local discount store, and I LOVE how it turned out!!And I saved the best for last- they only wanted $20 for both the nightstand and the dresser!!!

Oh, I love my new necklace.

Every girl I know just loves to get packages in the mail, who wouldn't?? So, when I got home and this pretty thing was waiting for me, I was so, so happy! Check out the cute egg collages on her Etsy site, so cute. Thanks again, Nicole!
